The Importance of Literacy

Literacy is an important part of the curriculum and culture at Caister Academy. Our vision is that every student leaves the academy with the communication skills needed to succeed and thrive in every aspect of their future- academically and beyond.

We develop opportunities for students to develop their literacy skills both inside the classroom and in electives, and promote reading for pleasure as an important part of our community.

Literacy across the curriculum

Fundamental Literacy goes beyond the necessary skills of reading, writing, and oracy (speaking). It includes every aspect of communication- from being able to accurately interpret graphs in Maths and the sciences and understanding recipes in Catering; to performing parts with the correct emotion and being able to read musical notation in Performing Arts!

With this in mind, each department has their own bespoke Literacy policy, designed to ensure our curriculum meets the basic Literacy needs of each student, in each academic context.
